The grieving widower Paul lives in the city of Bruges after the death of his wife Marie and practices a strange death cult around the deceased. But the encounter with the dancer Marietta turns his life upside down: the young woman becomes a mirror of his longings, onto which he projects the "return" of his deceased wife. Ms. Gartland appears as Marietta/Marie in this production.

He keeps a Kirche des Gewesenen (Temple of the Past) in her honor, a locked room including keepsakes, including photographs, a lute, and a lock of her hair. In this production, Ms. Gartland appears as Marietta/Marie.
